NGFFL'S FIRST  WTNB (women/trans/nonbinary)  TOURNAMENT IN PHILLY - The Philly Special 3.0

In 2022, with the help of the NGFFL, Women’s+ teams and tournament play saw incredible growth and development. Building off this momentum, and a successful and fun 2021 pre-Gay Bowl scrimmage between NY/Philly/DC, we decided to create a new tournament. The Philly Special is the first NGFFL sponsored Women’s+ regional tournament in the Northeast.

TOURNAMENT PLAY

Aptly named “The Philly Special,” after a notorious football play popularized by the Eagles (Go Birds!), the tournament takes place in the heart of Philadelphia on the Saturday and Sunday of MDW. The tournament is structured with pool play on Day 1 and semis/finals on Day 2. In our third year we are limiting registration to 8-12 teams and, while we anticipate these slots being filled by local teams, we encourage any team willing to make the trip to join us!

Field change

We’re on a mission to find a permanent home for the tournament and improve our field offerings. This year, we’re trying a new location: Roxborugh Stadium. This fields is located at 6400 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia, PA, 19128, approximately 30 minutes north of Center City and we’re excited to see how it works for our growing tournament. Your feedback will be invaluable as we continue to build a long-term home for this event!

PARTIES

Throughout the tournament weekend, we host parties and social events to give participants an opportunity to mingle and explore Philadelphia. We work with a local Philadelphia bars, clubs and other sponsors to create amazing tournament and celebrate queer sports. So, expect the healthy mix of competition and fun that you’ve all come to appreciate. In addition to visiting a historical city on MDW, conveniently nestled between the Jersey and Delaware beaches, the Liberty Bell Classic will also take place that weekend, meaning Philadelphia will be home to hundreds of LGBTQ athletes looking to celebrate queer sports.
